Wintertime often leaves people feeling blue. The Winter Blues is a general term used for feeling down at this time of year. It usually will go away on its own after a period. Here’s some things that you can consider doing to fight those winter blues.

1. Take a break from the news

The news tends to be filled with unhappy events. Negativity can impact your happiness and outlook on life. Eliminate or limit the time you spend reading or listening to the news.

2. Stay active

Staying active burns calories, releases endorphins, reduces stress, helps you sleep, and can even improve your memory. Exercise, even walking will improve your mood.

3. Get your rest

A good night’s sleep improves your attitude, concentration, memory, and decreases fatigue.

4. Get outdoors

The fresh air is good for you and if the sun is out, you will get a little Vitamin D.

5. Boost your mood with food

Eating protein at meals can enhance your mood and prevent cravings later in the day. Vitamin D is very important to reduce your risk of depression.

Eat foods high in Vitamin D such as fatty fish, take supplements or fish oil, and eat and drink foods with higher amounts of vitamin D such as orange juice, cereal, yogurt, and Vitamin D fortified milk. Avoid overloading on carbohydrates, and cookies/candies.

6. Vacation

Plan a vacation so you have something to look forward to. The change of scenery will often change your outlook because you have gotten out of the monotony of the days.

7. Do activities you enjoy

Spending time doing activities that bring you happiness is a way to fight the blues. Spend time with your family and friends, go to the movies, volunteer, go snowmobiling. Think about what you enjoy and take time out of your day.

8. Meditate

Take time to concentrate on what you have and be thankful for it can change your attitude.

9. Keep lights on in the house

The brightness gives the impression of daylight and sunshine.
